- The BOSTON RED SOX won the ALCS against the NY Yankees
Believe it! After the devastating loss a year ago, The Boston Red Sox came back this year with a vengeance! The Red Sox was down 0-3 in the series against the New York Yankees Empire, dimming any Bostonian hope of a revenge. The Red Sox was down, but don't ever count us out! We rallied back to win the next four games: Game 4 - 12 innings (Ortiz's home run), Game 5 - 14 innings (Ortiz's single to drive in Damon), Game 6 - Bellhorn 3-run home run (that proved enough to hold back the Yankees), and finally, the most exciting game of the series, Game 7 - Damon's Grand Slams to put the last nail in the coffin. The Red Sox pulled off the most unbelievable task and add a piece of history to its greatness. It is a feat that has never been done before in MLB history, and is arguably the GREATEST comeback in Sports history. Now, after 18 years of waiting, New Englanders have the World Series to look forward to in the legendary Boston Red Sox Fenway Park. GO RED SOX!!!

- IEEE Region 1 Micromouse Competition in SUNY, NY
Suffolk University 2004 Micromouse Team
IEEE Region 1 Student Chapters held a student conference annually, which consists of a student paper contest and micromouse competition. The 2004 conference is held in State University of New York at Stony Brook, NY. Having graduated from Suffolk University two years ago, I resumed the position of an advisor to the Suffolk 2004 micromouse team. This is the robotics competition where I have had the most fun. Not only did the Suffolk micromouse team win the competition by a landslide (first and second), we also came up with the Micromouse Theme Song, with Justin and Harold being the singer and guitar player respectively. Click here to watch the Micromouse Song clip. (warning: huge download - 7.5MB)

- Ski Trip to Mt Ascutney, VT
Edy, Suffolk University International Alumni Board (IAB)
This is my last skiing trip of the season. The snow condition was really really bad! It was almost impossible to ski without damaging the skis. So, we ended up doing some snowboarding instead. Those snowboards were rentals, so who cares! We joked that this trip was more like a spring break since we were more relaxed and warm. It's quite a change from my other skiing trips this season. Then, our rental van broke down. After some discussions, the decision was to leave behind the broken van :), and to rent 2 minivans to get us back to Boston. This trip was quite an adventure!

- Cross-country Skiing Trip to Mt Snow, VT
Edy, Jozef, Somerville Road Runners
This is my first cross-country skiing trip, and it's a short 2-day 1-night trip. We went on Saturday afternoon, stayed over in Keene, NH overnight and did a full day cross-country skiing in Mt Snow on Sunday. Well, even though it's a short trip, I had plenty of workout due to the nature of cross-country skiing. It was a warm weekend (around 40°F) and I skied the whole day on a T-shirt. What a difference from downhill skiing! It was tiring but also a lot of fun. One memorable moment was the dinner we had in Margarita (in Keene, NH) on Saturday night. Due to the bad service (we had to wait almost 2 hours for our meal), the restaurant picked up the tab, so we ended up having a free dinner. Not bad, huh? :)

- Ski Trip to Sugarloaf, ME (version 2.0)
Edy, Georgia, Jozef, Peter, Jana, Hynek, Suffolk University WAC
I did not take my skiing stats this time because of two reasons: 1) I had just been here two weeks before, and 2) I wrecked my back on the first day, so any stats would not be very interesting. The lodge we were staying in this time were huge and the snow condition was as good as it gets. For a SKIING trip, this one definitely rates all the way up on the top of the list. On my group, we were all good skiers. Those Slovaks in the group were also crazy skiers! With my current skiing ability, most people have to keep up with me, but this time, it's different. I have to keep up with these crazy Slovak skiers. Man, they are good! (and don't forget, crazy!)

- Winter Hiking in Fellsway, MA
Edy, Jozef
It was a really beautiful day. It was still freezing cold out, but when we got to Fellsway, it was definitely worth the trip. The temperature has not gotten any warmer in the last couple of weeks, and the lakes in Fellsway freezed over, leaving a very thick layer of ice on top. Well, we were not supposed to walk on the lake, but it was too tempting to ignore, and so we did :). If I had my ice skates with me, I would have done that too! A beautiful cold sunny winter day like this does not come often, so staying at home this Sunday was not an option. Besides, football season was over! It's time to enjoy nature (and the rest of this freezing winter :)

This trip was a blast! I had the most fun skiing trip ever, enjoying a range of activities from skiing, hot tubs, sauna, steam room, partying, snowboarding, etc. Yes, that's right! On Monday, 02/09/2004, I finally decided to pick up snowboarding. Don't worry, I am not joining the darkside yet! I learned the sport pretty quickly, thanks to Laura for her useful tips! By the end of the day, I was "linking my turns" and was able to do both heel and toe side turns with [relative] ease. That's my biggest accomplishment this weekend.

Aside from the skiing and snowboarding, there is, of course, the party! Watching the birthday girls, Leigh and Maura, owned the Widowmaker bar on Saturday was timeless. Getting the people in the shuttle bus to sing "Happy Birthday" was incredible. Winning free T-shirts, getting free concert tickets and a dozen free beers (no kidding! 12 free beers) was priceless. The crazy party, the childish beads competition, the moronic poker game and the invigorating hot tubs were simply out of this world. I wonder if I am ever going to top this trip.

- Patriots Won SUPERBOWL XXXVIII
New England Patriots beat the Carolina Phanters to become the 2004 SUPERBOWL champion. It was one of the best Superbowl game ever! The excitement, the drama, the close call, the final drive lead by Tom Brady in the last 1 minute of the game, and finally the win by Vinatieri's 41-yard field goal on the last 8 seconds. This game is what American football is all about!!!

- Ski Trip to Bretton Woods, NH
Edy, Joel, Roger, Mihai
It was the COLDEST day ever for me to go skiing!!! When we got up to the slope, it was reported to be -35°F (w/ windchill of course) on top of the mountain. Another 5-degree colder and Fahrenheit would have met Celsius! But as the result, most people preferred spending their time next to the fireplace drinking hot chocolate, which means empty lift lines and wide-open slopes! Those who have skied with me before would know that the cold weather won't stop me :) And hey, it didn't stop anyone in my group either. We did have to run back to the lodge every few runs, but we were back out again in no time as soon as we melt our fingers and toes :) At the end of the day, we had skied almost 40 miles in the freezing cold. I've got to hand it to everyone in my group for being such hardcore skiers!

- Cross-country Skiing in a Lake in Wakefield, MA
Due to the freezing cold temperature in the last month or so, the lake in Wakefield was frozen. The sheet of ice on top of the lake was now thick enough for skiing. To my amazement, there were some people out there in the middle of the lake windsurfing and kitesurfing (on ice!). That's just absolutely insane. The beautiful weather, bright sunshine and freezing cold temperature can probably drive people to do stunts like that, I guess!

- Ski & Stay in Maura's Place, Conway, NH
Maura, Kathy, Jallel, Dave, Steve, Jennifer, Sofia, Leigh
Overnight ski trip to Conway, NH. We stayed in Maura's place for two nights (thanks sooo much, Maura!) and skied in Mt Cranmore on Saturday. It was freezing cold this weekend. Temperature was in the single digit during the day and with the windchill, it hit over -20°F. But because of that, there was no one, and only hardcore skiers were left flying down the slope. The snow condition was great which resulted in me clocking myself the fastest yet on skis (70.6mph, oh yeah!). On Saturday, it was the great game between the Patriots and the Titans, and of course, the Patriots won! We are going all the way to the Superbowl this year.

- Ski Trip to Mt Sunapee
Edy, Georgia
Day trip to Mt Sunapee in New Hampshire (90 minutes drive from Boston). Even though the snow condition was less than perfect, it was a beautiful 30°F day (that's warm, by the way) and there was almost nobody on the slope. We didn't have to wait for the lift at all and so, we went up and skied down the mountain without break for a few hours. We were totally exhausted before the day was over. This was the first time I tried using my new AipTek babycam on the slope by attaching it to my helmet and it worked great.
